Note that the quality of food is a linear function of the y-axis, therefore most strains (at least the pickier ones) tend to group themselves in horizontal layers of certain vertical variances over time. If you spot a single bacterium with a significant vertical distance to the primary cluster of the strain, you can assume that its in enemy territory - at least concerning food.
